Planning the layout of a bedroom is more difficult than you may think…
First things first, it needs to have a bed in it. Sounds stupid, we know, but the sheer size of a bed to the relation of a room can cause problems. It dominates the space, dictating the position where all other items are placed. However, it’s not just the bed you need to worry about. The shape of the room can also cause problems. Awkward corners and lack of storage space are inconveniences that no one wants to deal with.
But don’t panic! It is possible to create a bedroom that’s both practical and looks good. Simply follow our advice to get the most out of your bedroom and nail down the perfect layout.
First things first, let’s deal with the shape of your room.
Obviously, we won’t be able to cover every single room shape and size. If we did, you could be here for days! However, we’ve chosen three of the most common room shapes to help you optimise your living space. Follow our tips and you’ll be seeing the benefits in no time…
1) Small and narrow:
You may feel limited with your layout due to the fact the room is barely large enough to fit a bed. However, there are some easy hacks to sort this. Push your bed against one wall, allowing as much space as possible. This will then allow room for a bedside chest and wardrobe. If your bedroom is especially small, try a floating shell to utilise your space. This will provide extra floor room. In fact, these also work well in tight corners.
Still need more space? Try a bed with built-in storage. You could even try a raised bed, so you can store boxes underneath. Another hack is to invest in a few mirrors. These help to make the room appear bigger, so place them strategically for optimum effect.
2) Large master bedroom:
Unite the space with a large rug. This will help pull the furniture together, creating a more integrated room. Place the bed in the centre of the back wall, and pair with bedside tables and lamps. A dresser and chair on the opposite wall will add the final touch to the room.
3) Extra large, long and narrow:
Don’t place your bed at one end of the room – this will isolate the rest of the space. Instead, centre it along the long wall. With all your space, you can take advantage of a king (or even a California king) bed. If you still feel lost in such a big space, large dressers rather than bedside tables will continue to fill the space.
Extra large rugs (that don’t cost the earth!) can be difficult to find. We suggest layering your favourite rug on a cheaper, extra large natural-weave rug. This will help to fill the large space. Also, try filling any awkward corners with a desk, light, bench or a plant.
We hope that our advice has given you lots of inspiration for your bedroom.

Read’s of Watton have one of the largest selections of sofas in Norfolk.
But with over 45 suites in our range, finding the perfect sofa can be overwhelming. There are so many questions to consider. Traditional or modern? Recliner or fixed? Matching accessories? While these are all important factors, one question dominates all others: Leather or fabric upholstery?
To help you make the right decision, Read’s of Watton have compiled a list of advantages and disadvantages for both upholstery choices. Now you can finally determine the style that is best suited to your needs!
Advantages of Leather Upholstery:
1) Its timeless, classic and sophisticated look. From a fashionable jacket to expensive car upholstery, leather is the epitome of wealth and sophistication! Fabric, on the other hand, is often seen as plain and practical. So, for a timeless, yet modern, classic, yet contemporary look, look no further than leather upholstery for a statement piece.
2) Its iconic smell. While this may seem ridiculous, the iconic leather smell that is extremely satisfying. After all, everyone loves a “new car” smell. Fabric, however, is porous. Therefore, it is more likely to absorb smells. From food odour, take-away curry or a pet toilet emergency, many nasty smells can be left lingering. The Read’s of Watton team would take a “new car” smell any day!
Disadvantages of Leather Upholstery:
1) Money’s too tight to mention! When looking for quality fabric, you expect it to cost more than your average material. However, leather will always be more expensive. Yes, this is due to its high quality, but not everybody has the money to spare. If you are on a budget, fabric is your best bet.
2) Lower levels of comfort. Want somewhere to relax after a hard days work? Then leather may not be your first choice upholstery. Fabric is far more forgiving and soft, creating a comfortable, snuggly sofa. Also, in the summer, leather can stick to your bare skin. This may make it uncomfortable to sit for long periods of time. However, its worth noting that if you suffer with back problems, the rigidity of leather may provide support.
Advantages of Fabric Upholstery:
1) More comfort. As a rule, fabric is both softer and cosier than leather. So, if you’re a sofa snuggler or like the comfort of a squishy sofa after a hard day at the office, fabric is your go to upholstery. It maintains the same level of comfort year round, unlike leather which can become sticky and uncomfortable in the summer.
2) More resistant to damage. Leather can easily become scratched or dented. Fabric, however, can withstand pet claws or studs on jeans for far longer. One of the biggest hassles with leather is its vigorous cleaning and conditioning routine. Without it, leather will harden and crack. Fabric, meanwhile, is far easier to mainten! A quick vacuum or steam-clean every few months will keep your sofa fresh and clean.
3) It’s all about the design! Leather is often restricted to a set range of colours, and even then they are boring. Blacks, browns and beiges are the norm. However, fabric has unlimited pattern and design choices. So, if your home is an eclectic mix of colours and patterns, be sure to choose fabric upholstery.
Disadvantages of Fabric Upholstery:
1) Say hello to stains and spills. As previously stated, fabric is unlikely to scratch as easily as leather. However, a simple spill could prove lethal, staining your upholstery forever! Unless your fabric sofa has a stain-resistant finish, stains (such as mud, ink or tomato sauce) may never fully disappear. Leather, however, can typically be wiped clean. If you are a family with young children, a leather sofa is your best choice.
2) A haven for allergies. Dust, pet dander and other allergens can easily be harbored in fabric. Leather, meanwhile, is hypoallergenic. This means it can easily be wiped clean of dust or other irritants. ____________________________________________________________________________

Read’s of Watton offer a wide range of tables for your home.
One of our most popular sells are our gorgeous coffee tables. But with so many designs to choose from, making the right decision can sometimes be difficult.
There are so many things to consider, from its size to its shape and features. Where should you start?
This is where our handy guide comes in handy. Take a look at our advice below, and choosing the perfect coffee table will be a cup of tea – or is that a cup of coffee?
What are the suitable measurements for a coffee table?
For this question, it is probably best to break out the tape measure! We believe for optimum comfort and cohesion, the height of your coffee table should be level with your sofa cushions, give or take one to two inches. The table should be around two-thirds of your sofa length, while a space of twelve to eighteen inches should be left between the table and sofa.
What shapes of coffee table are available?
► Rectangle: perhaps the most favoured shape, the rectangle table is the perfect companion to a long sofa.► Circle: circular tables can be swamped by large sofas, so are more popular for smaller set-ups. Often with a pedestal leg (a centre leg for support), they are perfect for game nights or gatherings around the table. ► Square: better suited to smaller sofas, square tables are not always long enough for lengthy sofas. ► Oval: like the look of a circle table but have a long sofa? Get the best of both worlds with an oval table! ► Trunk: mostly rectangle, trunk tables are defined by their lidded tops (like a suitcase). Offering plenty of storage, this design is perfect for book, film and game lovers whose things clutter the living room.
What features can a coffee table offer?
There are many designs for coffee tables, each offering their own unique features. Here are just a few:
Storage: want additional storage in your living room? A coffee table is a great choice. As mentioned above, a trunk design is a great choice, but so are tray tops. These are tables whose tops are made from a collection of removable trays. You can easily store magazines, remotes, DVDs and more in a stylish, but easily accessible, way. Also, many coffee tables feature drawers and shelves for all you storage needs.Lift tops: these movable tabletops can be raised to a dining table height if the occasion arises. Perfect for impromptu dinners and parties! Once finished with, the table can easily be lowered to its original height. Nesting tables: a series small tables of decreasing size, these fit neatly under the large table (almost like Russian dolls!) when not in use. Ideal for parties and gatherings, they can be moved around the room to hold drinks and snacks. Casters: otherwise known as rolling legs, these are perfect for if you regularly move your furniture. From refreshing your layout every couple of months to hosting regular parties, casters are your best bet!
What types of material are available?
Coffee tables come in a wide range of materials, each with their own pros and cons. Wood is obviously the most common surface, though easily susceptible to water rings. This can easily be solved by coasters or trivets. Metal is a clean and durable choice. Tables are often made from steel aluminum or iron, and are perfectly complimented by a glass or wooden top.
Glass is classy and minimalist, but needs to be cleaned regularly to avoid obvious stains and spills. Finally, if you enjoy putting your feet up on the table (no matter what your wife tells you!), an upholstered tabletop is a sturdy but comfortable choice. However, best use a tray when serving drinks to avoid any spills and stains.
Where can I browse for coffee tables?
Now you know how to choose the perfect coffee table for your requirements, it’s time to visit Read’s of Watton. We offer a wide range of tables which you can browse both online and in store. In fact, if you visit our Norwich showroom, you can have a drink in our delicious coffee shop to get you in the mood!
